Introducing Astor by Blue Nile™

We’ve got something exciting to share: Astor by Blue Nile™ diamonds, a brand-new level of brilliance.

Our diamond team is always on the lookout for diamonds that blow us away with their quality and brilliance. And while all of our diamonds are beautiful, our newest collection, Astor by Blue Nile™, is guaranteed to shine the brightest.

Every Astor by Blue Nile™ diamond is hand selected, specifically cut, and double certified by GIA and GemEx—a new partner for us—to unlock an unmatched sparkle. We asked for diamonds that catch the eye from across the room, and our diamond team did not disappoint.

“Customers come to Blue Nile for a superior experience and unmatched value,” said Chief Executive Officer Jason Goldberger. “We know they want more than a diamond. They want a lifetime of lighting up the room. That’s why we created Astor by Blue Nile™.”

What is Sparkle?

A diamond is comprised of facets, or tiny mirrors, that reflect light. As a diamond rocks back and forth, each individual facet comes alive with flashes of brilliance (white light) and fire (colored light). This display is known and measured as sparkle. Every Astor by Blue Nile™ diamond is specifically cut to achieve a noticeable sparkle.

Cut is Critical

Cutting a diamond from its rough form is the most crucial step in creating a diamond with extraordinary sparkle. It begins with premium quality rough stone with as few impurities or inclusions as possible. All Astor by Blue Nile™ diamonds are guaranteed to have no inclusions visible to the naked eye. The rough is then precisely cut for ideal proportions and symmetry. If a diamond is cut even slightly out of proportion, whether too shallow, wide, deep, or narrow, it will restrict the amount of light that can be returned to the eye. In addition, precise symmetry ensures that each mirror-like facet is evenly aligned to reflect the maximum amount of light. Astor by Blue Nile™ diamonds are precisely cut for ideal proportions and symmetry to achieve maximum sparkle.

Only one in every 1,000 diamonds is cut to proportions ideal enough to reflect the maximum light possible.

Double Certified

All Astor by Blue Nile™ diamonds rank as an Excellent Cut from the Gemological Institute of America, the world’s most respected independent laboratory. This is the institute’s top grade. These diamonds are also rated “Very High” in brilliance, fire, and sparkle when compared to the thousands of round- and princess-cut diamonds.

In addition to receiving a triple Very High rating from GemEx all Astor by Blue Nile™ diamonds are graded J color or better and SI2 clarity or better by GIA, the world’s foremost independent gemological lab. Each Astor by Blue Nile™ diamond comes with a brochure that includes GIA and GemEx grading information.

The key to measuring unmatched brilliance is a patented system called the BrillianceScope®, which was created by an electrical engineer, a mechanical engineer, and a physicist, as a way to determine light performance by measuring the range of brilliance, fire, and sparkle possible in each diamond.

Technically, the BrillianceScope® is an imaging spectrophotometer (that’s a mouthful) developed to measure a diamond for bright white light (known as Brilliance), bright color light (known as Fire), and scintillation (known as Sparkle). Astor by Blue Nile™ diamonds all rate “Very High” in all three of those categories.

While we have absolute confidence in the striking brilliance of an Astor by Blue Nile™ diamond, it’s best to let them speak for themselves:

Astor by Blue Nile (tm) diamond on the left versus a standard on the right. It's all about the light.
